2013, In Place of Miles for Meso …

5guysBoca Raton, FL –  The Sunday on or before February 14th, Valentine’s Day, has set the scene for 3 annual Miles For Meso road races in South Florida. This year there’s a new race in it’s place.

February 10th, 2013 the Five Guys Burgers & Fries 5/10K will kick off at 7:15 am.

As many of you know, 6 months ago Larry Davis lost his 6 year battle with Mesothelioma. And as many of you have mentioned to me in the days since, he left a giant space. He was a large personality. He was able to do things many people could not. Including helping to launch the Miles For Meso franchise that will hopefully go on raising money long after the original promoters are gone in as many venues as possible. Unfortunately I was not able to carry on his legacy in South Florida. Met by the loss of my dad and the distance between my home and this race, the name change, the beneficiary, the distance changes and what I thought was sure to be a venue change, I lost heart.

Despite all of these changes though, the good folks at the Runner’s Edge Foundation continue the race this year in the location that started it all. REF has teamed up with FIVE GUYS Burgers & Fries to hold a race to benefit the South Palm Beach County YMCA and the Larry Davis Scholarship Fund. $2.50 from every race application & payment received will go to the LD Scholarship to ensure a South Florida student is able to keep running in college.

If any of you reading this would like to participate in this race you can go to active.com to register or click here to go directly to the race link.

If you are interested in continuing the tradition my father began with this race, you can still donate to the Mesothelioma Foundation through his page. As of 1/9/13 we are just $680 shy of meeting my father’s goal of $100,000!!! I thank all of you who have helped make his goal a reality. You are all very special people. I cannot express to you my gratitude. In fact, I think I would venture to say all of the people who may benefit in the future from the research grant that will be named in my dad’s honor and have to do with immunotherapy, will also thank you! That grant will be revealed in Las Vegas on March 8th, 2013. I’ll keep you posted!

As for the Five Guys … if you are planning a trip to South Florida the weekend before Valentine’s Day (or live there), be sure to pack your hats & mittens and get out to Spanish River Park Sunday February 10th and as the sun comes up over A1A and feel great about yourself for keeping the Miles For Meso tradition alive!

All the best, thank you,
& believe in yourself, believe in a cure,
Courtney Davis

Miles For Meso 2012 VIDEO!

I completely fell short of sharing this video with you all … until now. My holiday was packed full of visiting my father’s side of the family and where I did try to keep up with emails and such, I honestly didn’t do a very good job.

So, now, Happy New Year to you all and enjoy the story Simmons Law put together:

Miles for Meso 2012 Brings Together Those Impacted by Mesothelioma

Every year, Miles for Meso brings together mesothelioma survivors, individuals recently diagnosed, and family members of mesothelioma victims for a run and walk to raise awareness and research funding.

The Miles for Meso races have taken place in Illinois, Indiana, Virginia, Ohio, New York,  Washington, Missouri and Florida. Throughout the past four years, the races have raised over $250,000 in proceeds for the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to finding better treatments and a cure for this life-changing disease. The race is a fun, educational event for people of all ages and athletic capabilities.
